The WRITING and SPELLING Road to READING and THINKING Mrs. Amber McGuire Wednesday, August 25, 2-3:30 pm This is an informal training using the Riggs’ Method for teaching spelling challenged students ages K-Adult. This method can be used for teaching reading from the beginning stages or to rescue your older students from poor spelling. It has also been used for teaching reading & writing English as a second language. See live demonstrations and ask your questions. If time allows, we will also discuss reading and reading comprehension. $5 suggested donation.
Latin is Fun! First Year High School Latin with Mrs. Donna Kuhn Thursdays, 9:30-10:30am $30 per month ($240 for the year) plus a one-time book fee ($35) Class starts September 9, 2010 and ends May 27, 2011 This class will take your 13-18 year old through the first year of Latin. Students should expect homework and assignments. It is a year-long course. Students are expected to attend every week and submit assignments on time. Three absences in a row will require the teacher to dismiss the student without a refund. Students age 14 and above may stay without a parent, under age 14, the child must be supervised by a parent or authorized person.
IEW Teacher Support Mrs. Jurene Phaneuf Beginning September 1 First Wednesday of Every Month 3:30-4:30pm Are you teaching IEW? Would you like an expert in the usage of IEW to coach you through some of your questions? Jurene Phaneuf will be available once a month throughout the school year to answer questions, give feedback and improve your teaching. Don’t miss this unique opportunity! Jurene Phaneuf was involved with IEW while Andrew Pudewa was developing this amazing curriculum. She has a wonderful grasp of this program having taught IEW to other students in a co-op environment as well as teaching her own children. $5 per month
IEW Student & Parent Refresher Mrs. Jurene Phaneuf September 8, 2010 3:30-4:30 This is not the main course but the salt & pepper of IEW. Review the IEW tools, understand where students need to go with assignments, how to improve performance, where they have gotten bogged down, bring your questions, frustrations, sample work from last year & brainstorm ideas for assignments for the upcoming year. Based on the response this opportunity may be repeated throughout the year. $5 per person
Elections 102 (Civics) Mrs. Donna Kuhn & Many Guests Thursdays, 10:45-11:45am, September 9-December 17 $30 per month (or $120 for the semester) Must have 8-12 students This amazing class is the second class of its kind taught again by our own Mrs. Donna Kuhn. It can be counted as a Semester Elective in Civics & Government for High School age students. Mrs. Kuhn will be inviting many guests from our community and statewide who are either running for public offices or are currently serving in public offices. The first class in this series occurred in 2008 prior to the presidential elections. We are again facing another pivotal year in our nation’s future. Students will not only meet community leaders, but will have opportunities to write letters to the editor, research issues and grow in their understanding of the democratic processes in American government. We will possibly take a field trip the week of Wednesday, February 23, 2011 for Homeschool Day at the Capitol in Olympia, WA. The field trip details will be announced in December. Taken in conjunction with the second semester Constitution class (information below), the student will be able to step closer to adulthood with greater knowledge and capability. We are bringing in the next generation of decision-makers for our country. Join us in laying this critical foundation!
Constitution Class Mrs. Donna Kuhn Thursdays, 10:45-11:45am, January 6-May 27, The Homeschool Book Shop $30 per month ($240 for the semester) Using the familiar curriculum and format of Institute on the Constitution, Mrs. Kuhn will be taking high school students through this most important document. She brings an amazing amount of passion, knowledge and experience to this class. She will be using this familiar curriculum to enhance her teaching. Students should expect up to 5 hours of homework a week with written assignments and will be expected to participate regularly.
Entrepreneurship for Teens Mrs. Amber McGuire Thursdays, 2:30-3:30pm, September 9-May 27 $50 for the year plus voluntary expenses throughout the year (to be announced) Requirements: 14-18 years of age You don’t need to be 22 to begin making money. Join us to learn about the process of conceiving, birthing and growing a business. Learn what it takes to start your own business and how to decide whether it is a good venture for you. We will work through all of the steps of setting up a business, planning for growth and bringing it to fruition. The class will set up its own business, bid for jobs and share the profits when the work is done. This class is a full year commitment and requires extra time in the spring to manage the business that the class has developed. Scheduling of business opportunities will be determined by the class as the year progresses. Come prepared with your creative ideas about business, marketing, financing and don’t forget the enthusiastic hard work required to be successful!
Science Club: Apologia Physical Science Supervised by Parents, Inspired by Students Thursdays, 12:15-1:45pm, September 9-May 27 Requirements: Apologia Physical Science 2nd Edition, Text & Solutions & Tests Books. Recommended Algebra I or be taking Algebra I concurrently. Club Fee $10 per semester, but students will share responsibility for supplying materials & presenting experiments. Physical Science is a fabulous introduction to all of the high school sciences. This Club will be a one year commitment with the goal of completing the text by the end of the school year. Parents will supervise the meetings, but students will be responsible to plan the year, prepare, set up and clean up experiments. There will be a planning meeting August 31 for parents & students. Science Club will begin meeting September 9, to do the experiments that correspond with Apologia Physical Science modules. The students will be expected to schedule the year, assign the experiments & homework, administer & correct tests, perform experiments, journal results and prepare a presentation for the parents at the end of the year. Students will also be responsible for scheduling guest speakers or tutors as needed. Parents will be asked to aid their students in preparing their experiments and to attend at least one meeting per month.
