Knitting Class

July 15, 2009

The Knitting Class formerly scheduled for July has had to move to August. Here are the details...

Knitting Course Syllabus

This is an introductory 4-week knitting course designed to give the students a basic grasp of knitting. Topics covered will include a brief history of the art, methods, knitting abbreviations and terms, knitting tools, basic stitches and techniques, and simple pattern reading. During each session we will be working on a handmade dishwashing cloth that each student will be able to take home at the conclusion of the course. There is no fee for the course. The following is a material list for the items needed; please bring them to the first session, as we will begin working immediately on our project. Parents are welcome to attend and participate. There is no age limit or requirement, student ability is left to the discretion of the participants, however, recommended age is 10+.

?   “Sugar’n-Cream” yarn by Lily (color of your choice, one skein of Worsted cotton
4-ply, approx. 150 yds.)
?   Size 8 US knitting needles
?   Small crochet hook
?   Embroidery needle
?   Pencil
?   Small writing pad

In addition to learning a new visual motion art form, according to research from Cardiff University, Harvard and others, further benefits of knitting include:
Increased concentration, improved hand-eye coordination, enhanced mathematical-logical intelligence, and heightened relaxation. Knitting continues to be used therapeutically for chronic pain, ADD & ADHD, cancer recovery, post-traumatic & grief-related stress, as well as cognitive & motor skill impairment. Knitting engages both hemispheres of the brain and increases alpha waves.

We apologize for the reschedule (circumstances out of our control) and we hope you can join us in August!
