Learning Disabilities & Special Needs

January 3, 2009

We have had a pleasant and exciting break for the holidays and we are back and in full swing! It wasn't hard to come back since we are so excited about what we are doing here at The Book Shop!

Our first winter in Spokane is promising to be exciting with all of the snow. Apparently, we are having record breaking snowfalls, but we are completely undetered! The kids are sledding down the heaps of parking lot snow when they get a much needed break from studying. The sun breaks are astoundingly refreshing and even the cold seems somehow warm!

It has been absolutely amazing to meet so many lovely people here and the book selection is becoming richer all the time. I heard someone say recently what a strange feeling it was to see their ecclectic collection of books somewhere other than their own house! I empathize! It is an odd feeling to see so many books that have aided my family over the years in the education journey, collected right in front of me every day! I'm so thankful for all of the families who have entrusted their books to us and have consigned such great books!

A need has been expressed several times since we have opened our doors that I would like to share with you. One of the most common question we get is...How do you homeschool children with special needs or learning disabilities? What resources are available? I must say that the books that come through our hands on this topic, come and go quickly! We aren't able to keep them on the shelf long because of the demand for information. This decries a real need in our community.

Though we cannot offer specific advice on this important topic, we would like to facilitate a parent's support group for home educators of children with special needs. This could be anywhere from dyslexia to autism, brain damage to muscular dystrophy, or a child undergoing treatment for cancer. If you have unique circumstances, we want you to know that you are not alone and your experience is valuable! God had created each of us with a unique set of circumstances. The challenges and difficulties that you face may not be as "unique" as you perceive. Are you interested in meeting others? Sharing your experiences or sharing helpful resources? Don't hesitate to contact us and let us know! By letting us know, we can select an evening or morning when The Shop is closed to meet together and exchange ideas and encouragement.

If you are interested in meeting with other parents for encouragement, please, send us an email through the Contact Us page and we would happily provide a location and any other support we can in getting others with similar circumstances connected.
